In general, we ignored social reality…
A smart and well-written confession by Paul Ford, who has been in the Internet culture (whatever you call it) for a while (like seven years!), who’s changed his mind a bit about this stuff since and whose « theories » are extremely fruitful. The Great Essay of the week.
« Art, like debris, has no utilitarian purpose » : The Digital Landfill.
« The world of S-21 [Tuol Sueng prison, of the Khmers Rouges regime], nonetheless, was a completely human world. What happened there was evil, but neither the photographs, the confessions nor the way the prison was run have come to us from another planet. Instead, once the photographs have made us frightened, nauseous and angry, as they must, they cry out for compassion and understanding. »
Killing fields, by David Chandler.
(I apologize for the lightness of the surrounding entries and the inappropriate constrast they create.)

The HTML hour
I’ve been trying for long to understand why those hellish cells in my HTML tables never keep the size I order them to have, and why dragging them is SO unsuccessful. I’ve seen a lot of bla-bla about transparent 1×1 pixel gifs, but never quite get it — people talk about it as if everybody know what they mean.
Eventually, I’ve found this page, which explains the whole stuff perfectly. I turns out to be very simple. A must-read if you want your pages to look a bit serious.
An old classic of the Improbable Research : Comparing Apples and Oranges. Hilarious.
A fascinating online test about : « First, that our private attitudes may not always be ones that we are willing to express publicly. Second, that our attitudes may not even be accessible to our own conscious thought and feeling ». It’s here.
As far as I’m concerned, the proof was blatant and I haven’t still recovered from that.
I’m now the worst techno-geek I happen to know. Thank you Nita, this is one of the most wonderful gifts I got, ever. Love you.
